P/T - Library Assistant - Grolier Club of New York

LIBRARY ASSISTANT (PART-TIME), THE GROLIER CLUB The Grolier Club of New York, America’s oldest and largest society for bibliophiles and enthusiasts in the graphic arts, is seeking an energetic person to assist part-time (no more than 20 hours per week) in a key area of Club activity.  Responsibilities • Prepare new books and auction catalogues for shelving, including bookplating books; writing call number flags; mylaring dust jackets; and printing price lists for recent auctions. • Sort and shelve new books; receive, check-in and shelve all periodical issues and auction and dealer catalogues; and create and update serial catalogue records, SCIPIO records for auction catalogues, and collection level records for dealer catalogue runs in OCLC and in the Grolier Club’s VTLS/Virtua online catalogue system. • Prepare books, catalogues and serials for off-site storage, including identifying and pulling underused items; measuring fragile items for individual enclosures; boxing all items; maintaining detailed inventory lists of contents for each box; bar-coding boxes; and entering bar codes into bibliographic records for future retrieval. • Assist resident researcher using Grolier Club Library collections for the Schoenberg Database of Manuscripts Project document sales of pre-1600 manuscripts (http://dla.library.upenn.edu/cocoon/dla/schoenberg/index.html), including paging auction and bookseller catalogues, researching catalogues for relevant data on manuscript sales, and entering this data into proprietary online Oracle database. Qualifications Successful applicants for this position must be very detail oriented; work independently and with minimum supervision; and possess good computer skills and have knowledge of basic Microsoft office applications (familiarity with library technical processing procedures preferred). Experience in data entry required, and background in manuscript and/or rare book studies or medieval and/or classical studies preferred. Basic reading knowledge of Latin and at least one European language, especially French or German, is highly desirable. In addition, applicants must be able to work in conditions where dust is frequently encountered; lift up to 30 lbs. boxes and to push and pull loaded book carts and other library equipment and materials; and work for prolonged periods in standing, bending and stooping positions. Salary: $15/hour This part-time, one-year temporary position is available immediately, with a desired start date of September 20, 2010.
