The Reference Librarian will receive a generous total compensation package. Bonuses are awarded in recognition of individual and firm performance. As a Reference Librarian at Latham, you will provide reference services involving legal, business, and general information sources to attorneys, paralegals, and staff using a variety of databases and research tools while accomplishing these and other critical functions:

  • Conducts domestic and international legal and non-legal research utilizing appropriate database and research tools and directs Attorneys to appropriate sources.
  • Participates in creating and managing library digital collections and promotes access to online materials.
  • Reviews diverse sources of information for currency, reliability, relevance, and cost effectiveness, then chooses the best sources for answering research requests.
  • Compiles and organizes information obtained in research projects into a coherent, focused collection of information, accompanied by explanatory notes if relevant, so that the material is readily understandable to the user.
  • Maintains familiarity with the library’s own information resources, in particular its catalog, circulation, acquisitions, and routing systems.
  • Maintains awareness of current developments on legal news and information services, specifically with developments regarding Lexis, Westlaw, the Internet, business databases, and specialty databases relevant to the office’s practice areas.
  • Performs cite-checking: analyzes and verifies legal citations in memoranda and pleadings using Lexis or Westlaw, and the Blue Book or other citation authority.
  • Performs other library administrative and technical services tasks as needed.
As a Reference Librarian, you will be expected to apply your organizational and communication skills while displaying a positive, high-energy attitude. The successful candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science with a minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience as a research or corporate librarian. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of digital legal and database research systems and print reference sources in legal and business areas. Well-developed and professional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with people at all organizational levels of the firm.
