P/T Digital Initiatives Librarian, Fashion Institute of Technology – NY

The Library at the Fashion Institute of Technology seeks a forward-thinking individual to serve as Digital Initiatives Librarian to oversee and direct digital initiatives related to electronic access, content management and metadata-dependent efforts to describe, manage and share library collections. This is a part-time position 22/hours per week/daytime hours (M-F between hours of 8am-6pm)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Management
Provides leadership in the area of digital asset management within the library environment by formulating policies, procedures and best practices for the production, management, description, access and preservation of digital content and metadata, technical workflows, quality control and associated intellectual property issues

● Evaluates and implements technologies related to the management and dissemination of digital content; evaluates effectiveness of metadata
● Works collaboratively with and/or supervises faculty, staff and student employees working on digital initiatives projects
● Oversees Library’s participation in college-wide initiatives to capture, preserve and provide streaming video of lectures, events and instruction across the FIT campus
● Participates in outreach activities promoting the Library’s digital and open access projects and services
● Works closely with the Emerging Technologies Librarian on digital initiatives
Collection Management

Supports the discovery of and access to the FIT Library’s digital image and video content through metadata creation, analysis, enrichment and maintenance according to local and national cataloging and metadata standards materials in a variety of languages and formats

● Ensures timely access to digital collections through accurate description of resources
● Provides technical expertise in digital applications; provides training as needed
● Keeps abreast of developments in electronic publishing, networking and indexing
● Determines mechanisms to provide off-site access to digital assets
● Set standards for resource description of the library’s local and unique digital collections
● Performs necessary maintenance tasks on MARC/metadata records to ensure accuracy and continued resource discovery and access
● Works in collaboration with Special Collections staff to ensure preservation and access of rare and unique digital resources
● Harvests and curates video content across the college; oversees consistent metadata description of video content

LIAISON, OUTREACH AND COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT

● Selects materials and other resources in assigned Librarian Liaison subject area(s) ● Acts as the point-person for assigned Librarian Liaison subject area(s) with regard to information and referrals for all Library services
● Reviews and evaluates relevant databases, periodicals and reference books
● Maintains and promotes interdepartmental communication
● Actively participates in the internal marketing program of services and resources; continues to create connections with classroom faculty

FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Represents the Library as faculty
College-wide, participates in the mentoring of colleagues and pursues professional growth

● Attends and participates in Acquisitions and Metadata Services meetings
● Participates in Library governance and attends Library faculty meetings
● Participates in Library Research and Instructional Services and regularly scheduled reference desk shifts
● Serves on Library and college-wide committees and task forces
● Participates in the Library’s Strategic Planning Process and implements policies and procedures that support the Strategic Plan
● Participates in curricular and pedagogical discussions by attending College-wide and departmental meetings and shares knowledge gained with Library personnel
● Represents the Library at College functions (workshops, committees, special events)
● Active membership in local, state and/or national professional organizations and awareness of current topics in the field
● Seeks relationships with other institutions, including collaborative initiatives
● Participates in the mentoring program for new librarians in other areas of the Library

Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
● MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution
● Minimum of two (2) years of library experience
● Demonstrated knowledge of MARC and non-MARC metadata formats, standards and schema (e.g., Dublin Core, METS, MODS or EAD, etc.)
● Experience with principles of authority control, including selecting and applying controlled vocabularies and ontologies to local collections
● Knowledge of discovery tools and metadata practices supporting discovery, specifically in a library context
● Experience working with collection management systems
● Experience working with collaborative cross-departmental project teams
● Experience working in support of a special collections and/or digital collections environment
● Evidence of flexibility and ability to adapt in a rapidly changing environment
● Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
● Two (2) years post-MLS professional library experience
● Experience working in an academic or research library or equivalent professional venue
● Experience with scripting languages, especially related to metadata manipulation ● Experience with instruction and assistance in the use of the online catalog, library databases and print materials
● Experience with migration of digital asset platforms
● Experience with CSS, XML, XSLT and harvesting standards
● Familiarity with data interchange standards
● Knowledge of preservation metadata standards such as PREMIS
