Digital Collection Specialist, NY Transit Museum (NY)

The New York Transit Museum seeks one Digital Collection Specialist to assist the Museum Collection staff on a grant funded project to improve the overall Collection Management process from ingest to access.  The mission of the New York Transit Museum is to: Collect, exhibit, interpret, and preserve the history, sociology, and technology of public transportation systems in the New York metropolitan region and conduct research and educational programs that make its extensive collection accessible and meaningful to the broadest possible audience.

The Collection Management department at the NYTM would like to reevaluate a few key components of our process to better contribute to the Museum’s mission. During this grant funded process the Digital Collection Specialist will be working closely with the Museum Collection staff and an Archivist on a three tiered Collection Management restructuring. This includes the following:

  • 1. Evaluate how material is transferred to the Museum from the various agencies, in what format it is transferred and come up with a comprehensive methodology for improving this process.

  • 2. Survey the Museum Collection and identify what is most frequently accessed and what would benefit from a largescale digitization project to improve access. Come up with a longrange plan for digitization including timeframes and budgets for various collections.

  •  3. Working with the Archivist, evaluate possibilities for a new Collection Management System and/or Digital Asset Management System as well as a public digital collection interface.

Qualifications

The Digital Collection Specialist should have a Bachelor’s Degree and some experience working with archival and/or museum collections; fluency in archival standards; experience evaluating records for preservation and retention; experience managing digital assets including ingest, preservation and access controls; knowledge of video and audio conversion equipment; knowledge of various scanning and metadata processes; willingness to learn about emerging digitization technologies; capacity to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to prepare policies and procedures for records transfer
