P/T - Info Commons Librarian, Brooklyn Public (NY)

Brooklyn Public Library is looking for a part-time librarian in their Information Commons at the Central Library.


Responsibilities:

The statements below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so classified. All personnel may be required to perform duties outside of their normal responsibilities from time to time, as needed.

  • Provide bibliographic instruction, reference, and other information services
  • Orient visitors to the design software and other technology in the Info Commons
  • Assist with preparation and other logistics for Info Commons events
  • Assist with troubleshooting technology problems
  • Assist visitors with reserving public meeting rooms
  • Interpret and implement BPL policy
  • Opportunities to plan and conduct classes and other programs to promote use of the library’s services, facilities, and collections (including online collections and databases)
  • Opportunities to do outreach to community organizations and participate in community events
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Some evening and Saturday shifts are required: at least one evening per week, plus at least one Saturday per month

Qualifications:


  • M.L.S. from an ALA accredited library school
  • Public librarian’s professional certificate issued by the State of New York
  • Experience working with the public and diverse communities a plus
  • Teaching experience a plus
  • Working knowledge of Windows and Mac environments, Microsoft Office, digital reference resources including EBSCO and ProQuest products, III’s Sierra, and major social media platforms
  • Familiarity with the fundamentals of major design and multimedia applications, such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Final Cut Pro X, GarageBand
  • Advanced skills in photography, video production, and/or audio production a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, identify and assess problems, and decisively implement appropriate solutions
  • Demonstrated respect and sensitivity for cultural differences
  • Second language skills, especially Spanish, a plus
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate work efficiently
  • Ability to work collaboratively and on cross-functional teams
  • Knowledge of fundamental principles, practices, and emerging library trends of modern libraries
  • Flexible and adaptable to change
  • Involvement in professional organizations a plus
The hourly rate for this position is $28.15.  The schedule for this position is a maximum of 19 hour/week.
