Summary Description:
Reporting to the Head of the Cataloging Unit, the Japanese Project Cataloger will perform original and complex copy-cataloging of books, serials, manuscripts, and other library materials in the Japanese language. All original cataloging is performed in accordance with national standards. Knowledge of OCLC Connexion Client, Library of Congress policies and Library of Congress online resources are required. The incumbent is also responsible for contributing and maintaining authority records for Columbia Law Library's integrated library system and NACO. The incumbent will also perform other related duties as assigned.

This is a temporary grant-funded appointment intended to last two years from the date of hire.

Major Responsibilities:
1. Perform original and copy cataloging of Japanese language materials using OCLC and local system, insuring accurate access points through authority work and assignment of local and LCC call number schemes.
2. Stays informed and applies the most updated cataloging instructions according to RDA, LC-PCC PS, LCSH.
3. Participate in special projects and undertake miscellaneous assignments as required.

The Arthur W. Diamond Law Library offers its researchers one of the finest collections of legal materials in the country in both digital and print formats. In addition to a near comprehensive United States Law collection, there are strong collections in International, Foreign, and Comparative Law and a special section devoted to Japanese Law. The Law Library has significant collections from at least thirty different countries and a useful core of materials from many other jurisdictions. Minimum Qualifications:

All applicants MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered for the position.
- Original and copy-cataloging experience
- Expert knowledge of written Japanese, fluent English
- Excellent knowledge of MARC21, AACR2R, RDA and RDA Toolkit navigation, LCSH, Classification Web, Cataloger's Desktop and OCLC in Connexion Client
- Knowledge of cataloging/metadata standards and reference tools, including AACR2, RDA, LCRI, LC-PCC PS, LCSH, LC Classification Schedules, PCC & CONSER cataloging guidelines, and MARC formats, etc.
- Good computer skills, including ability to use word-processing keyboard between English and Japanese.
- Knowledge of bibliographic databases.
- Strong collegial and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills  
Preferred Qualifications:
- Original cataloging experience using bibliographic utility (e.g., OCLC Connexion) and local library systems.
- Familiarity with the Library of Congress Japanese Romanization rules.
